hey mate thankyou for the reply on coverting a 2l pinto engine into a mk 1 cortina. You say in the response about modifying the engine mounts seeing as i have the whole mk2 escort there would it work if i took the cross member and the mounts out of that and put it in the corty would that work and would it be easier.

lots of things need to be considered before putting in a rack and pinion front steering cross member
its not a straight bolt in and many things need to be changed
there are sumps ready made to fit pinto into mk1

My mate told me that you need to use MK2 Escort 2ltr engine mounts.
He kept a set for me as i am contemplating doing the onversion myself.

heya am doin the conversion myself at the mo,
have been told by a reliable source that the 1600 crossflow mounts do the job, also the round rubbers(which can be found in a escortmk2 sport and ghia) are a plus.
in about a weeks time ill have a hoist so will be doin the mock ups, will post progress reports

hey there, have pretty well got the engine ready to go in, hit a few snags...
the pinto wnt fit between the mounting stalks that come off the crossmember as u seem to know, u mentioned modifying the cortina ones. i dont know exactly what this involves although i imagine its just cutting triangles out of the base of them, bending them out and welding them up.
im opting to take the ones out of my donor escort and relocate them right out near the chassis rails they should fit in well jus have to drill some new holes to bolt them on.
wouldnt recommend this if your donor is a sub 1600 model as they wont hold up nor be certifiable
also the steering box will get in the way of the headers, as im not gonna do the rack mod., im gonna have to bend them in a bit.
i have seen this done and know it works
...as for the sump, im not so sure. i have heard people say that a later model pinto'd cortina one will bolt up but i have my doubts so im gonna cut the top off it spin it 180 and weld it back up .....worth a shot lol
keep ya posted

have talked to a few people and have found that the escort crossmember will go in without too much hassle, the problem you then have though, is nothing else will line up.
i was gonna do the same coz i wanted to swap to the escort rack but it isnt as simple as that, it throws all the front end out and to remedy this you have to have a whole lotta other parts from other fords a few of which youll still have to modify.
will find the parts list if u wanna continue with that ..
mine is coming along, i have pretty well got it all sorted, just had to cut the seam welds off the escorts stalks and remove the two bolts that hold them on and they fit well onto the cortina crossmember, now pretty much just tryin to source a sump---which by the way have found that a 2l cortina sump and oil pick up will bolt straight on---
then ill have to modify the trans tunnel as the 5 speed wont fit, but thatl be for another day....
how do i upload photos on to this forum???
update soon

Dont know if you got the American Pinto saloon in Australia but if you did this is what you want as it had a front well sump and bolts straight on. I have used one on an injection pinto lump I put in a Mk2 Cortina a couple of years back. As for the engine mounts I used RS 2000 alloy ones but you can use crossflow mounts, the engine towers were cut at the base at the front and leaned back so as to get the engine sitting as far back as possible (then welded back up of course!) Rack and pinion fitted using a fabricated crossmember that fitted where the old steering box/idler arm bolted to the chassis. I used a Fiesta Mk3 rack, lengthened the crossmember to get the pivot points in line for rack ends and inner TCA mounts. adjustable rose jointed Capri TCA's were used mounted to Cortina legs, I fitted a rose jointed adjustable tension strut (you can then add more caster) from the TCA's to the bumper mounting bolt point (reinforced) then I cut off the threaded end of the antiroll bar and fitted a drop link to a bracket welded to the tension strut down to the antiroll bar. Steering column was a Capri with a Mk3 Fiesta steering knuckle connected to a 5/8th hexagonal bar to another Fiesta knuckle then to the rack. Must say that under front shot was work in progress not the finished article, but you get the idea. I have also done the same to my Injection powered 2 door Corsair that you may have seen in Classic Ford Magazine a couple of times.Last shot is my engine bay. Paul Watts

Hi Guys/Girls,
I bought a high energy sump and pick up for the for MK1 Cortina 2ltr conversion of which i never ended up doing - stayed with Kent
It's designed for racing therefore built well will a lip all around the bowl to esnure oil stays within the pick up zone for hard corners.
Therefore I still have this in a box and it's for sale.....now that you reminded me.
I will also put it on the for sale site and as I am new here will attempt some photo's too....
I will want around $350 (a loss of $100 plus delivery).
