Anyone know of anyone who has done a Turbo Diesel Cortina? Would be interesting to find out as I'm slightly curious to know if there is any diesel that would fit into a cortina.

Now if any one has done so it will more than likely be on Malta---they have done some turbo diesel drag racers based on escort mk1---and most proberly some daft irishman has done it---yes there is a turbo diesel escort mk1 van over here --some guy who s a driftchampion built it----cant recall whats in it---but it wasn t a ford ..i can tell you that a FORD 1.8 turbo diesel from an old sierra would fit. The block is a close cousin to the xflow block ---the engine mounts are in the same position and the bellhousing is ford --it used a type 9 box--but i wouldn t be doing you any favours if i recomended it --terrible engine--it sounded like a cement mixer--and some say it drove like /worse than one. There are a few lotus seven s which have done it using audi /vw--- in The Netherlands--they had bellhousings made to use ford type 9 boxes and there was an engineering company who used to make a bellhousing for the old vw golf 1.6 / 1.8 sohc petrol engine conversion into rwd for escorts. (these units share the same bellhousing pattern as their diesel counterparts)BUT any body who has comitted such a horrific crime is not going to openly come forwards and acknowledge such an attrocity--because the punnishment for such is so severe that people only whisper about it--you could face a public lashing with a stocking full of your own sh*te---im not serious--- but some could explode at the mention of it.. It would be a good daily runner idea giving the way prices are going and if you could get a new bmw one in --these sound damn good and have enough torque to go chasing down v8 s at the lights with--any way stay anon , work remote and under the cover of darkness ---assume a new identity and if you suceed-- shame us all

Hmmm, I work with and have driven many cars and after driving them I have been thinking about the engine and box from the Ford Ranger/Mazda BT50 2WD. They go like stink and have the right blue oval on the covers.
2WD, 4 cylinder 2.5 L, 105kw, 330Nm, 8.5 L per 100 km, or 3 L, 115kw, 380Nm and 9.5 L per 100 km for the 4X4 engine.
I havnt run a tape measure over one yet but I will on the next one I get in. :unsure

Hmmm... just found out the Ranger/BT50 diesel was also used in the jaguar X-Type.. Cant be that bad then can it..
I'm just thinking of what could be done with more boost and fuel... 130kw and 450nm could be a good target maybe? couple that to a 3.08 diff and it would be economical and fast when needed.

we've got a diesel ranger & transit at work, loads of torque, even in the LWB transit it will go up a decent hill in 6th & not struggle.
Im sure if they fit in the focus you could get them into a cortina.
I recon its a great idea & something different to the Zetec/duratec conversion. I recon it would go harder aswell as they have the same horsepower as the duratec but heaps more tourque...

I think it would be much easier to get a 2wd BT50 Engine and box, just need the electronics then off we go! Chassis would need to be strengthened to handle the torque though.
