thinking of doing this conversion?
here is some info that may be of help
engine bay wise usually removal of battery tray, original engine mount towers
so that you can start the making of new mounts
sump does not need any changes what so ever !
its a little tight at the rear of the engine but can be fitted without any mods
to the firewall (similar to a pinto conversion)
the main area of changes as is with all mk1 conversions is the gearbox
tunnel size. Factory mk1 gearbox is quiet small and narrow and work needs
to be done here to accommodate the larger nissan 5 speed gearbox and
new gearshift outlet
tail shaft like all conversions will need to be made to suit yoke and length.
more can be seen HERE (http://www.cortina-mk1.com/sr20.php) on our conversion page

that area being only one of many cross braces and not being the main long chassis rails should be ok
engineers here have passed it ok for rego ...in the past..

how much different would it be to put it into a mk2?
also roughly how much would it cost to do?
cheers
jewels

bugger all difference really
be more space available on the sides of the engine
cost well ... that depends on a lot of factors

Hi all,am new to this forum and i am wanting to put an sr20det into my mk1, i was wondering if i bought a half cut would i be able to use the engine mounts off that or even modify the crossmember to fit.? if neither is possible does anyone make the engine mounts so i could just weld them on?Should probably also let you know that my car has been stripped down to its undies and been sandblasted and primed and i am trying to do some rust repairs myself. not very good at it if i do say so myself, but its fun trying, i found the car on a farm a couple of years ago buried up to its sills in dirt and found the owner who said that it had been sitting there since 1986!!! its not in too bad condition considering, main problem apart from the usual rust areas is the front passenger side guard has been smashed in and a very shonky repair performed, i would like to post some pics for you to see if anyone can show me how to do that, thanks in advance.

hello mk1mayhem and :welcome:
there is no need to do that as that would create more problems with steering etc
and mounting of the cross member

Need Help Please.. im trying to use the engine mounts off the sr20 and make new mounts off the crossmember to fit but i cant seem to get the engine back out or in when they are tacked in place as the bolts on the rubber engine mounts wont line up until the engine is fully lowered into place , if i slot the mounting holes on the new mounts this would fix the problem but is this legal or is there a better easier way any help would be much appreciated thanks . oh and how do you upload photos?Oh and i did call geoff and he said to try and just copy the pics on the mk1 cortina website but i still cant get them to work right

hi have you seen or done a frount end convertion sr20 or ca18 using the s13 crossmember so all the power steering is hanging off it ?

I'm far from having seen all conversions, but not to my knowledge.
Being front sumped, I am assuming the rack and everything is behind the crossmember? That would be necessary if it was ever going to work.
But might be easier just to start from scratch. Reckon you would end up redesigning the entire crossmember anyway...

I know this is an old post. But it might be a case of using a bigger hammer/lever.
We took one with slotted mounts out a few weeks ago and it was still pretty stubborn. I think it's legal to slot the mounts. Mine are and it passed engineering no probs. Best to look it up though just to make sure.
Also, it the gearbox currently separated from the motor? They are a big GB for a small tunnel. Could be causing issues?

thanks Dr, i have managed to get it all in and did just slot the mounts, came up quite good i reckon. gearbox was attached and i made sure i had heaps of room by cutting out the tunnel before hand. i have now cut the tunnel out of the half cut donor car and fitted that into place where the old one was and you would be suprised how well it fits with just a bit of trimming. now i have to get the diff sorted and the front suspension and brakes , then start putting it all back together, like windows , doors , rubbers etc. cant wait to get it going.

Is it possible you could make a separate thread with photo's and things? Would be interested in seeing the halfcut tunnel photo's if you have any.

If you are a memeber (as you are), you should have full entitlement to everything everybody else has.
You have to go to 'Gallery' and select 'My Album' from the dropdown list, then on the top right, you will see 'New Album'.
Upload to your hearts content.
Done and done!

Anybody know the fortory angle the Sr20s are mounted at?
I got the engine and box seperatly ie not a whole front cut.
I guess it to be about 5 degrees to the exaust side, but a confermation would be good for piece of mind before I make the mounts.
Thanks Craig

bolt the gearbox on the engine, put it in the car tilt it untill the gear lever is straight up and down with the lever in neutral position then make your mounts up ...... check steering lock to lock as the inner tie rod ends run very close to the gearbox bellhousing.........

Chears Geoff, thats what I did, its good to get confermation for peice of mind. No worries about clearence for the steering as the engine is set right back into the fire wall for better ballance and no headaches with room in the front.
