Also noticed it has the UK spec bonnet badge and not letters, yet it has the Ozzy spec GT chrome strips down the side and round the door trims, the UK spec Super had them only.

The GT estate was built only to special order. The south African police force used them, but some was also sold thru dealers to private customers.
The GT estate have the super VIN code and is a kitted out super, not a unique car.
From what I have heard all estates was built in UK thatīs why they have the euro style bonnetbadge. You know from the VIN where the car was built.

In other words they were built out as Export spec GT's which came with the Super trim package, like the GTs which came to the USA, NZ, etc, that were UK built.

Aussie ones were assembled in australia from kits sent from england. Known these days as CKD (Complete Knock Down).
Dunno if they were built anywhere else besides UK and OZ though

Zoombie: you got it wrong way around, it the other way around, the GT estates are supers kitted out as GTīs. If you look at the VIN code it says super on the GT estates, the 4 door and 2 door GT have their own unique codes not the same as the super.

The MkI were built in many places, Phillipines and South Africa amoung other countries. I will have to check my books at home to be sure of which more.

It sounds strange to me that the aussie cars were shipped in kits from UK to be just put together in australia. There are so many differences between UK cars and aussie cars, bonnet emblems, rear ving emblems, unique interior colors, unique exterior colors. Maybe they shipped parts from UK, but it sounds like the cars actually were fabricated in australia and not just assembled.

yeah Im no expert on Mk1s, so Id say you are correct.

Ive read in two different books that Mk1s were CKD, although thats probably wrong too...Unless anyone knows an old ford OZ employee who can verify??

I am not sure at all about the aussie not beeing ckd, but since they have colors and parts not used outside Australia I thought it sounded more logic that the cars were fabricated and painted in Australia before beeing CKDīs ie a fully painted body as a base for a kit.
If somebody can confirm for sure it would be quite interesting to know.

I work at Volvo in Sweden and we ship CKDīs over the world, as well as we have factories in some countries. The only thing they NOT do in the outside sweden factories (except for Gent in Belgium) is pressing the steel panels, they use components from Sweden (and Belgium) to weld the bodies together.

I worked at F English in Bournemouth PDI ing cars in the mid 60s. They supplied three Mk 1 Cortina GT estates to a local company, I believe they were ordered specially.
