as some may know we have had a project that has been on the back burner for many many years now
63 2 door deluxe
during some discussion late last year we have decided to re-commence and restart this project
we have gone with a rack but keeping it rear steer
we will try to minimize firewall mods as much as we can
i will upload piccys as soon as we have something tangable to look at

ALRIGHTY!!!... Ive been waiting for this :)
Is it gunna be street rego'd??
jewels
14th April 2008, 04:48 PM
yea
so its gunna be a big build
many things have to be considered for this reason
we always were going to use the steer box as the original engineer wanted that
but, this engineer and his superior required a rack
Dr Danger
14th April 2008, 05:35 PM
Yea for racks!!
Steering ones...
Will you be able to retain the heater?
geoff
14th April 2008, 10:03 PM
heater you bet , al
firewall will look standard
except the tunnel will look
a bit larger.(ive started the
rackconversion and is comming
along nicely. the crossmember
is a work of art with the rack
mounts being grafted into the
rear of the original crossmember
should look like a factory item
but not as rough ....

LOL geoff "work of art" .....you dont think that maybe a bit objective to some...heheheh :D
no its nice tho :)
Dr Danger
15th April 2008, 09:09 AM
Well Geffro, if Jewels says its nice, it must be! :) Photo's please. In fact, this thread needs photo's of the car in question or it is pretty much useless.
I figured you wanted to retain the heater but there isn't too many V8 conversions that have. That green 2 door one in the UK springs to mind though.
Objective/subjective Jewels??? Not that I'm pedantic or anything... :)

15th April 2008, 11:35 AM
Is the firewall going back but still looking stock, or staying in the stock location?
What rack are u using mate?
...i agree, mucho pics please! :)
jewels
15th April 2008, 01:51 PM
some pics soon as i can...stand bye
as for the rack
it is a centre steering rack
the steering arms come from the centre
this will enable factory geometry not to change from factory specs
these racks a commonly used in australia for rack conversions because of this feature
RSS (http://www.rrs-online.com/rack&pinionproducts.php) the ford component place
and blacks racks (http://www.blacksracks.com.au) the holden place
the top of the firewall should remain factory including heater/fan box
there will be changes made to the tunnel tho
will appear factory if all goes to plan

16th April 2008, 02:15 PM
What car is that rack out of Geoff? Or is it custom?
Other Plans??
Auto or Manual??
Wheels??
Drag, street m/c or sleeper look??
jewels
16th April 2008, 04:01 PM
no its not a custom run of the mill
every day car
auto at this stage
street car not a sleeper as such
will see strip work :)
wheels well ... always hard have something in mind tho
jewels
20th April 2008, 06:12 PM
im sorry i havent mentioned what car the rack is from as
made by australian company kirby bishop
and fitted to i daewoo cielo yea i know thats why :)
anyways here you can see how it mounts and works the existing steering
arms which are the same factory distance apart on the old drag link
distance is also the same from rear of cross member to mounting wholes
we have to fit a 'tapered boss' on each side so the tie rod (track rods) fit
as normal
Dr Danger
21st April 2008, 08:36 AM
Work of art... :)
I'm pretty happy with the look of that. Well done.
So to finish off, some bosses for the tie rod ends and to rig up the steering shaft?
benny
21st April 2008, 09:52 AM
Dumb question of the day here......how the hell do you change those rack boots with disassembling all of your steering?
jewels
21st April 2008, 02:29 PM
benny
you would have to remove the centre mount bolts
plus the mount on one end (non steer column end)
so 4 bolts still some fiddling round
but we will make sure the boot is in good nic or new before final assembly
:)
zombie289
22nd April 2008, 11:37 AM
Looking good there guys. Will you be tubbing out the rear end?? 4 link etc??
jewels
22nd April 2008, 02:42 PM
zombie,
no there will be no tubs just a squaring up of the tub
will run with leaf springs and a 'cal-track' type of setup
jewels
25th April 2008, 02:57 PM
after a bit of fiddling and discussion
we had changed from front to sump to rear sump
and now we have gone to front sump again
and this is what we will be sticking with...
small mod to a factory oil pan
jewels
26th April 2008, 05:15 PM
we will have a custom sump made in a 't' shape at the front to make up for
capacity loss
have it sitting on a couple of pieces of wood atm but will be the clearance
we need once weight is put onto the engine mounts
still waiting on the reamer to complete to mounts for the tie rods
then they will move in a lot closer to the rack
water pump is a special conversion taking near 50mm out of the front
jewels
26th April 2008, 05:23 PM
The 2 door has been seam welded as well as a 3/4 chassis fitted which ties
into the original front rails
then 3mm plate will line the original front chassis rails then plug welded into it
the engine mounts have already have the crush tubes and bolts fitted so a
quick weld will mark the spot where the rest of the mount will be made
we also sat a bonnet on ... and even with the victor jr the carby clears with
some 'small' amount to spare.
ozzie
26th April 2008, 05:26 PM
seems the new project as hit the shed and a lot has progessed:)
jewels
27th April 2008, 05:37 PM
trans now fitted for rear cross member fabrication
alignment and checking for final mount making done
the engine mounts basics are done finishing still required
a lower intake manifold may need to be fitted as the victor JR may
be a little high for an air cleaner to be fitted
zombie289
28th April 2008, 03:46 AM
Hmmm, that water pump looks suspiciously close to a Holden 6 cyl one????!!! :)
Can you notch the sump at all to get the donk lower?? or does that create header and crank clearance issues?? Looking good guys!
jewels
28th April 2008, 05:21 AM
correct !
as for the sump yes probably could get a little more but i dont think enough to make it comfortable
there wont be any crank clearance issues now
and we must have 15mm clearance around everything motor to chassis
zombie289

Hey thinking out loud here, after seeing the old drag car pics u posted, How nuts would a Mk1 look w/ candy paint, Cragar SS mags 15x4 front, 15x8 rear with maybe like a fairlane thunderbolt hood scoop or flat hood....like if someone built a Mk1 to go A/FX racing with (before they went all nuts w/ the altered wheelbase stuff)...
jewels

Wow! http://www.cortina-mk1classifieds.com/forum/images/icons/icon6.gifThat looks like it should do the numbers!!
Super impressed, I know if you chip away at something the end result is more impressive than you might have imagined was possible, but I would be nervous to start a project this big!

Over here its considered pretty much junk on anything thats more than mildy modified....the GT40 stuff, TFS, edelbrock etc, is much better as well as the bigger injectors req'd, you will pretty much throw all of that stock 5.0 HO stuff away if yer after serious power...

jewels
9th March 2009, 08:22 AM
yea toby :)
it loves fuel too start ups have been on sunoco NOS supreme ($7.50 litre) :yikes
im glad we have started it as it gives a a chance to sort out gremlins etc before painting etc
so things i can check of the list as OK and being tested are ...
charging system
alternator/gen light
cortina factory gauge operation with this engine
cooling fan operation (going to change the switch to a lower temp not that happy with its turn on temp)
water leaks
passenger side starter conversion operation
we will change to a smaller alternator belt
holley (more fuel on the outside :clown carby) 750 DP operation
oil leaks (we have found one)
i have wired the car myself so im keen to test these things while running
its good it 8)
