Hi, I have a 66 Mk1 cortina that I am about to get started on with its overhaul. I have decided to place a turbo 4agze engine in this car, I am aiming for 250kw mark out of this engine which I know I can safely do. Now with this serious power increase I know there are issues to be delt with for suspension, braking, driveline etc etc. The plan for the car is to be a street driven car thats main purpose is to be driven for hill climb, targa, and possibly some track use, some of these events can be done without a cage, but I may put a cage in the car.. Here are plans and questions that are swirling around in my head any guidance would be helpful:
Rear end: I plan to put a Hilux rear diff and drive shaft to handle the amount of power that will be put through to the ground, LSD's and replacement parts for these can be sourced. Here in NZ they seem to be very easily accessable and to get them adjusted to fit the cortina dimensions there are many people who can do this, I will be changing to disc brakes on the rear too. Now the biggest question at the moment is wether I keep the standard leaf spring combination or I change to a multi linky type setup, I can see the benifits of the multi link for handling and traction issues, But I am not really keen to loose the rear seat at this present stage, is there any way to put a 4 or 5 link type setup in that would not cause me to loose the rear seat, as most combinations that i have seen people have said they had to remove the seat..
Front end: really the only question I have here is deciding on the change to steering rack as apposed to the sloppy steering box that is currently in place. The sump bowl of the toyota engine is in the correct place for the engine conversion and hangs over the front of the crossmember quite nicely but I am not too sure if there is enough room for a steering rack in front of the crossmember, what are other ways to tackle this rather then cutting out the front of the sump bowl, Is it possible to put a steering rack behind the crossmember!!
The last question is fairly simple to stay with 4 stud or change to 5 stud pattern?
Any help / Crazy ideas that might just work or have worked in the past would be appreciated. I want to plan everything out before I hack, cut and weld to bring this beast alive.
Thanks all
