hi shane,

i have an older car 1964
and would like to keep the original type seat belts but get them re-made maybe

can i still use the old 'clasp' type seats belts

or am i stuck with push button modern type?

hey there,
i used to be in auto upholstery and it was quite a common thing to change the strapping and retain the original components, BUT, you should check wether youll need to get it certed. in new zealand you do...but if a good job is done no one will know, and if the upholsterer follows the original design it will be more than strong enough

My belts had already been swapped, both sides different and one looked like an aviation belt! I took the faded, purple magnetic clasp style belts from my 69 Mk1 Escort, painted the webbing black with rattle cans (dodgy much?) and stuck them into cortina, nobody has said a thing.

I tried to dye them, but after a week in, they didnt change a bit.

They are as unsafe as all hell, as the seat swings forward like a two door as well, so to eject yourself through the windscreen, all you need to do is hit a bump and then something solid..weeeeeee!

Seatbelt solutions in Perth will reweb the old belts and apparently they are the only ones in aus. that are licenced to do so. Its all explained in their website.

Funny thing, seatbelt regulations. They seem to be a bit weird wherever you go.
Up here, you don't need seat belts in a pre 1968 car, but it is illegal to remove the belts if they have already been fitted.
Mk1 cortinas were usually fitted with 2-point inertia shoulder belts (aka "throat-cutters" - because your lower body is not held back in the event of an abrupt stop) in light grey webbing and with clasps.
2-point hip belts (aka "head bangers") are not allowed for front seats.
Thus, you don't really get away with anything but modern, self adjustable 3-points. Problem is every time somebody gets in or out of the backseat, step on the box, and the belts get stuck. Also, the original mounts were usually made with throat cutters in mind, which is high enough to make them uncomfortable. Had to make new mounts, about 2" lower, to stop the belts gnawing at my neck.
Perhaps an ejector seat is best choice after all? At least got some style. "Wheeeee" indeed! :D

Funny thing, seatbelt regulations.

I think in NSW (nightmare):

a) Seatbelt laws came in in '71. Pre '71 cars don't need seatbelts
b) if your car has seatbelts, you have to maintain them - you can't remove them without replacing them
c) if your car goes out of rego, you need to fit seatbelts to the driver + front passenger seats.
d) you must fill the seatbelted seats first
e) kids under 1 year must be in an approved baby seat
f) baby seats must use a child anchorage point
plus new laws coming into force next month:
g) kids 4 + under must be in an approved child seat with anchorage point
h) kids 7 + under must be in an approved booster seat

I've only ever seen "throat-cutters" in the back of a 2 door Capella here.
"Head-bangers" were pretty standard for middle rear seats up until about 1990?

I read somewhere ("The Dog and Lemon Guide"?) that the best seatbelts are (in decreasing order)
1) 3 point with pre-tensioner
2) 3 point web-grabber
3) 3 point manual (if correctly adjusted)
4) 3 point inertia reel

Apparently the inertia reels stretch a fair bit.

Also it's safest to be tall and skinny, as you are furthest from the wheel and and less load on the seatbelt. Oh well, 1 out of 2 aint bad.
