View Full Version : **SOLD** Uncle Jakes Pre65 race MK1

I am going to sell a Mk1 two door race car pretty soon, but it is in New Zealand and I am not certain what the Australian tech restrictions are.

The car is a good one (1500cc pushrod) but the current rebuild has not been completely finished. It owes me close to NZD$90k as it sits but I am pretty much over racing and the car was built for NZ Pre65 racing so perhaps much of the money spent would be wasted on an Australian track car given that you probably have different rules.

You seriously need to improve your sales pitch Unc!

I have personally drunk copious amounts of beer with the owner and can vouche that it is immaculate for a racecar.

All fittings are Earls alloy ones with stainless braided hose

Light weight steel crank with conversion to lip crank seal (ex. L16)
New custom made extra long forged rods (Argo Race and set up for standard bearing sizes)

Weber 45mm carbs and linakges with lots, and lots of spare jets, venturis etc.

Driveline
New custom made steel flywheel
New Quartermaster 5.5 inch clutch
New Tilton centre push hydraulic self returning release bearing assembly and remote bleeder

Holley fuel pressure regulator
All gauges are genuine Autometer except the fluid filled fuel pressure gauge which is a Summit

Trailer (which will also fit a Ford Escort) with winch, straps, LED lights etc.

I raced it for a few years then rebuilt it in 2002. I raced it for a couple if years after that an it was fast, but not fast enough so I started again with the view of making it light. EVERYTHING that could be lightened has been. This has cost a fortune but I have lost interest in racing ansd the car has sat semi finished for about a year.

I have calculated the finished car to be about 745kgs dry. I have gone to quite a bit of effort (within the Pre65 rules) to make the unsprung weight as low as possible too.

All these bits have been designed to work together and are all connected by the flash wiring loom. The entire car is designed to come apart easily and fast (e.g. dash out in less than 17 minutes) so I would really like to keep it all together. I will resist parting out for now.

Some assembly still required. 60 to 80 hours of effort would get this car completed (plus manifolds and tuning).

Missing: The car needs door glazing but to be honest would benifit from all glazing being replaced. It deserves custom manifolds and needs the signwriting stripes done on the new bonnet, boot and doors and a new harness. I can't think of anything else that needs to be purchased (apart from fluids and filters) but there is a few hours to spend doing things like fitting the bumpers, shortening the bonnet pins and dyno tuning the engine to perfection. I always wanted to change the roll-cage to chrome molly but never got around to it

It is built to these rules: www.pre65.org.nz

Price: I want NZD$25,000 for the car as it is (which is about what I have spent on the engine alone) including the trailer. I will assist in transport arrangements but the cost of the transport is your concern (I am told it is about $AUD$2.5k). It may be cheaper to ship without the trailer

Take care,
UJ

Now that's my type of car, love it.
Unfortunately ot would only fit into improved production or sports sedan classes here as the qroup N (pre 65) here is no where near as free as NZ.
Can you post a pic of the down draught head? I have some unmachined manifold castings to siut one, left over from mine which may suit.
Sure you can't bring it to our nationals???

Thanks Swampy. I will start a project thread when I get a chance. The head isn't down-port but a semi down-port. I don't have any photos of it sorry.

We thought long and hard about a down-port but I am yet to see a reliable car with a down-port. It is impossible to do without going through the waterjacket and eventually it will leak IMHO.

To finish first, first ytou must finish etc.

I better have a search for your regulations. Anyone got a link?

The NZ ones can be found here www.pre65.org.nz (http://www.pre65.org.nz)

Here are the cams regs for group N.
There was a cortina that ran in group N about 10 years ago here that used a downdraught head and it won the class by a mile and the club
championship. They then outlawed them. Bur thats the only one I know of that has had success.

^ Wow.

Much of my car would be illegal in Australian Group N then. You have to keep the heaters! In Australia! Do you get cold? Lol

No dry sumps??? That has to be a money saving rule that in fact costs the competitors money in the long run.

I better stop now as I am getting a little off topic and don't want a whipping on my second day as a forum member:offtopic

Strangely, if you had asked me to sell it to you a year ago I would have said no. Even if you offered me $60k ....... but now that it is almost finished I find that I am not interested in racing anymore and just want to go spearfishing every weekend.

It will be annoying to loose so much money - but that is race cars.

What other classes would be suitable for this car in Australia? It has flares and a modified floor (exhaust tunnel) so doesn't look like it would suit Group N without a bit of body surgery....... and then there is the switchgear in the dash, dry sump and who knows what else they would pull you up on

Hi UncleJake
would be an awesome car but you are right, unfortunatly too modified for our group n rules. Would qualify as a sports sedan for sure, and maybee as a "biante" series car. their rules are not as strict as the historics

would be a weapon though

cheers

ted

UncleJake
14th April 2010, 02:10 PM
I had a look at the Biante Touring Car Masters regulations and this car wouldn't be far off being legal for that series - but they don't actually list a Mk1 Cortina.

To make it Biante legal you would need to change the bonnet, boot and doors for steel and the front hubs would need to be replaced. You would need to add head and tail lights too I think. You may get away with the existing bore size if you filled out a VO which you would need to do for the enhanced guards anyway (let's not call them flared!)

The rest of the engine, oil system, brakes and and driveline looks to be legal.

There is probably more that I missed but those were the obvious things. I don't know if my motor will run on 98 octane, but it wouldn't be hard to have a thicker headgasket made to reduce compression. I used to run custom made gaskets on the old motor and they weren't that expensive (about $210 each from memory).

I think the best fit would be the under 2 ltr sports sedans (in Vic anyway) and you wouldn't have to do a thing.
Interesting about your weight aims, when I raced my 240 group n in the early nineties we weighed it after a race at
Winton and it came in at 752kgs and fast Jonnies was 762. Mine was std body with an alloy half cage and that's about it.
Still road registered. Might have been a happy weigh bridge but the same one they were doing formula fords. Is it by welding in all the brackets and go fast stuff that the rest of the car needs such a diet? Have you had yours weighed, you might
be surprised now that the work has been done.
BTW the heaters are only for show.
Swampy.

Hi Uncle,

I am very interested in purchasing your car. Can you message me an email address or phone number so I can find out a bit more about the car.

I race a MKI Cortina in Historic Touring Cars here in OZ. You pre 65 racing is a LOT different to our cars.
Your cars look great.

Regards

Nick

15th April 2010, 08:35 AM
I will send through an email address soon Nick

I would be happy to sell the doors, bonnet and boot locally if that helps anyone but they are exceedingly light.

WRT weight - there is a fair bit of extra strength in this car and it has the dry sump system which probably adds 15kgs but I really should weigh it again once the engine is delivered and I have her back on all four wheels.

It will take me a while to get it mobile and to have the paint touched up from stone chips and a single rub

It was quick mate. I need to break it to Leslie that I have lost a bit over $60 grand but she will get over it and I will have a bit of spare space to finish her fintail Mercedes

what about the orange corty on your NZ pre65 site? Is it still for sale? is it a good ride?

UncleJake

The orange car is a good one Swampy. Not as quite fast or high tech as mine but it is still a bloody good car. The guy has money and has not been shy in spending it on the car. He has upgraded to a Mustang

UncleJake

Oh, you may well see the silver car across the Tasman if you are anywhere near Queensland :driving

A forum member has bought it but I will let him introduce himself if he wants to. With luck I will be able to read about the upcoming exploits here. I have about 80 - 100 hours work to do before the car can be dispatched though.

Thanks for updating the thread title Jewels. I couldn't work out how to do it myself.

Hi everybody:cheers

I am indeed the new owner of this fantastic looking car. I have been floating around here for a while, I have been regularly checking the for sale section, I did not know there was a forum untill about a week or two ago:unsure
I think I was online when the for sale thread went up.....
A little about myself.

Born in N.Z. been living in Queensland for about 10 years, Always loved Fords, I think its because my dad and older brother are Holden fans, im unsure. Owned heaps or mk1 escorts, including a nice RS2000 replica, a couple of rally mk2's had a nice Mk2 GTE, blue with black stripes and a nice vinyl roof. :drool
When in high school I had a friend who's brother built an immaculate MK1, Two door, white with a green stripe.I loved the shape and have always wanted one, now finally after 20 years I have one.
Jason this car will be well looked after and we will continue to let you know what is going on with it, as I have told you, it was my wife who told me to " buy a project " Im just happy that I was " in the right place at the right time":thumbs
I look forward to chatting with fellow enthusiasts and hopefully I can contribute as well,
We (my wife and I) run a business which specialises in amongst other things Vehicle Hoists, being a forum dedicated to cars and working on them if any one needs any information or help please don't hesitate to ask.
Oh yeah, my user name.........:yikes..........That was my daughters idea.....

Kris, it sounds like you are extremely well qualified to take on a highly strung, bad tempered, high maintenance 47 year old.

Much like yourself I saw a Mk1 two door in my late teens and vowed that one day I would have one as a race car.
