i have a mk 2 tina (i know it aint a mk1 but this is the only place i can get any straight answers)
i bought my tina 3months a go and pondered for the last month should i do a conversion
i been thinking about a essex v6 3litre,a pinto 2litre or jap sr25

i know that i will get reliability from a jap motor but i am a loyal ford fan
the car currenty has a 1600crossflow and 2000e gearbox
how much cutting if any would need to be done to fit the essex and pinto
and what all will i need for jap conversion

the ford motors are tough but are a bit slugish on the power of the nip shit
i know for a pinto conversion i will have to get gt front struts and brakes, the front crossmember the gear box and its crossmember the tail shaft engine mounts the wiring loom and complete motor and carby and raditor
most my knowledge is from family members back in ireland but most there pinto conversions where to escort from kents to pintos

hi bono,

welcome :)

what you may have to consider is parts availability here in australia
im not sure how you will go getting stuff for an essex v6

there is still a far bit of pinto stuff around here

as for the sr20 there is heaps of hi po stuff to suit any level you may want.

but as you say its not a ford
and i can understand your reluctance straying away from the blue oval

if you go the pinto way injection would be the go with an aftermarket ecu

the same would be ok for the sr 20 as well so you are in the same boat there

fitting the pinto and sr20 will be about the same work

but it all depends on what you intend on doing with the car?

since the last time iwas on the tina had a lot of work done the front bench has been removed and two red 1600e buckets gone in ,the body is neary done just one rust repair section to do and need to fabricate a new front valance as it is near impossible to source a new one
the cortina started today which made my day and had a quick spin in the storage place its stored at and by the way the motor feels it will just need a service and a good clean out its got torque and wants to pull it round the corners sideways

got myself a set of rostyles that will make the period right and gonna get whitewalled 185s on the back and 165s on the front and a British Racing Green paint job with white lotus/gt strip and with the stock rims i am gonna put on dirt tyres for the odd bit of rally
standard suspenion and brakes new brushes coilover just to much a hassel to get

interior will be palimo grey(stock colour) seats matching carpet ventian blind and timber facia and door trims

hi bono
post up some pics when you get a chance

as for rust sections are alsmost impossible to find these days (unless yuor lucky) ..unless you import panels from the UK

this place makes many for MK2s but they are certianly not cheap.

Steel panels for MK2s (http://www.steelpanels.co.uk/cortina2ec.html)
