I put a double row timing chain on my 1600 when I rebuilt it and after about 150km of running in there's a leak so I pulled the cover off and was then reading the instructions that came with the timing chain and they said to not put the tensioner on. I didn't read them though at the time and have put it on. It's a pain to remove too so I thought I'd ask if anyone else has done this or if they use the tensioner or any reason why you shouldn't??

I too run a double row timing chain. The tensioner is definitely used in my case and I have no had any issues.

Did you use the standard single row tensioner?

no - there is a double row tensioner from memory.

Well stupidly I installed the standard single row tensioner when putting it back together not knowing there was a double. Crow Cams actually said to leave it off but it's not easy to remove. Any reason why I couldn't just leave it on??

probably not an issue now but as the chain wears it may become one. How far across the second set of links does the simplex chain tensioner go?

Simplex pads are fine and run on an unworn section.

Once the chain is worn enough you hear it rattle on the inside of the timing cover.

From memory the tensioner pad covers both chains but only just. Will there be any detrimental effect if I leave it on then? Will it just wear the chain in a uneven fashion?

sounds like you answered your own question, and Paul's confirmed it. Relax!
