View Full Version : One dead Cortina

Blew up the Cortina on Saturday morning. Kinda expected it. Dropped a water line on the way home from the Rat on Friday. Fixed it on the side of the road, drained some water back into it and got back to Melbourne after Geffro checked it over. No probs on the way back, just a litre or so of water lost from the radiator for the trip. Thought everything was going to be okay. Saturday morning. Driving back into town to help someone else with their car. Starts running like poo. Stop. No water in radiator. Shit. Fill er up. Wind it over... Took a while to crank the water out of the cylinder(s) but she fired up eventually. :) Strange looking white smoke/steam comming from exaust region. :( Got to where I was going (JUST) and parked it. Predicting a REALLY dead CA because it must have got pretty darn hot a couple of times. It was still running though!
So not sure what to do next. Couple of options.
1) Whip off the head and have a look see. Replace HG with standard if not too bad. (Cheapest?)
2) If bad, find new engine, fit. (Cheapish?)
3) Whip out engine. Rebuild to 'stinka' specs and do skids. ($$$$$)
Keeping in mind I havn't got too many $$$ right now. So option 1 or 2 look good. Biggest problem is that it's parked in the middle of Brunswick on the side of the road. Bit of a bastard. I'll speak to my people over the next couple of days and see what happens I guess.
Sigh.

Had to happen sooner or later really. No huge dramas. New graphite head gasket for $85 and a quick trailer ride to Geoff's shed for a couple of sleeps and she'll be apples again (hopefully).
Have no idea about graphite HG's but it wont be in there too long anyway (again hopefully) so should hold up OK until the big rebuild.

When you say you don't know about graphite gaskets, does that mean you don't like them or you just plain don't kow much about them? If it's the latter, we will soon!
It's only a tempory stop gap (boom boom) anyway...

I'm pretty proud of that effort really. It's a small wonder the thing was running at all let alone pulling skids (small ones...) and stuff. Should shred them tires up even quicker when it's all up and running again!

Hmmm. Looking forward to more skun knuckles and stuff.
Might have to hang that head gasket on the wall of the shed Geffro? Put it in a frame maybe... :) As proof that CA's kick ass even with blown to the shithouse head gaskets.
Sure, they kick ass a little less, but they still hose some competition!

What's that, the bike or the Cortina? :)
Got it home fine. Emptied all the 11ty Billion tonns of crap out of it and then proceeded to scare myself stupid with how abruptly the thing comes on boost now. :) As you know it poored rain for all of Wednesday. That was fun... Managed not to park it into any things of a immovable nature (touchwood) but my goodness, just think about pressing the go pedal a little bit and off she goes down the road sideways. Good stuff. Next step is to turn the boost down a little. Probably making a little more now anyway so I'll knock it down to 12 or 13 pound and see how that goes.

your just a scaredy cathttp://www.cortina-mk1classifieds.com/forum/images/icons/icon10.gif....get bigger goolies and keep the foot into it, it will straighten up eventially. Good to hear it is running so much betterhttp://www.cortina-mk1classifieds.com/forum/images/icons/icon7.gif

I have a bigger set of goolies on order Greg... :)
I'm only turning the boost down because it's a bit more than should be up it now anyway and I keep hearing a strange noise that I think is comming from Mr Turbocharger under, errr, 'leadfoot' situations... Situations that are now more frequent for some reason. :)
