View Full Version : Figuring out diff ratio

Hi,

I have a November '63 Cortina.

It is a 4 door 1200 Column Shift Bench Seat Deluxe.

It has a Dagenham plate on it, so I think it was fully imported as new.

We've had it since my wife (then GF) left school in '94.

http://www.pixelmatic.com.au/cortina/corty.html implies that it should have come with a 4.4:1 diff.

We did replace the diff early on (96/97?) when it got noisy, not sure if it was 4.4:1 or another speed.

What are the clues to whether it came with a 4.4:1 diff and/or still has one?

Obviously I can jack up one rear wheel in netural and count how many times I have to spin the wheel to make the tailshaft rotate once.

Are there hints on the body number or stampings on the diff?

If it was replaced with 4.125:1 or 3.9:1 is it easy/possible to fix the speedo?

Are the 4.4:1 diffs easy/cheap to get/repair?

cheers,
Woody

can you tell me the model code from the ID tag ?

if its a 1200 more than likely it will have a 4:1

:oopsOops, I forgot to look. I have a crappy photo which includes the ID tag, but all I can make out is Paint A55...
I've asked Mrs Woody who's at home to take a better photo / write down the numbers ...

Mrs Woody came through with the goods:

Cbrbd - serial prefix
104084 - serial no
28312 - model
A55 - paint
2213 Sido
320246 - trim

So using your links (thanks again):
Cbrbd - Australian Built RHD Jan 64.
104084 - serial no
28312 - 4 door Deluxe 1200 5.20x13 4.125:1
A55 - paint - Arctic White / Powder Blue / Powder Blue
2213 - Tutone metallic pleated vinyl Light blue / medium blue Bench Seats

All of which matches reality. Except I thought it had a Dagenham plate on it somewhere... And we always thought it was a '63.
It had a decent front-ender in '99, maybe they switched the whole front end...
Other theory is it was Built in england and Australian complianced?

320246 - What does this mean?

A55 - 3 digit paint code - is the 2nd or 3rd colour the bit which is green on a Lotus?

So 4.125 means that http://www.pixelmatic.com.au/cortina/corty.html was off-base?

I'll have to jack up the wheel and see what the ratio really is...

Ah no - the 4.4:1 was 1200cc airflow models 65/3 to July 1966.

Cool, thanks for your help :-)

I've also found the parts I need (sill, ball joints) on this site, so I'm all set to get it back on the road...

This is written in the front page of the manual as "Body".

I can't find the dagenham plate anymore, it may have been taken off during some accident repair (it had a medium head on crash with a Tarago in 1999). Where did they usually go?

In other news, I plan to register it on Tuesday, it's running again (fuel pump valves had dried shut + points and rotor corroded), has a few seized wheel brake cylinders (4 wheel drums) and needs new tie-rod ends. Anyone have a set in Sydney?

cheers,
Woody

Pulling up an old thread but I just pulled the diff out of the car to see its condition.

Crown wheel has 33 teath and pinion is 8, does this mean 4.13 ratio, is this correct??
